Talking With God by Adam Weber – Book Review

Here are my thoughts on Talking With God by Adam Weber and why you should read it.

What’s It About

Whether you’re just getting started in prayer, or you’ve been praying for a long time, whether you feel guilty for not praying enough or it’s your favorite thing to do, this book is for you.

In Talking With God: What To Say When You Don’t Know How To Pray, Adam unpacks how simple prayer really is and gives practical insight from his life and the Bible on how to talk with God in all aspects of life: in the midst of crazy busy schedules, on behalf of others, when you’re going through a hard time, and more.  The re-released softcover version of the book includes a new chapter on listening to God that is packed with great truth about making space for God to speak back to us and how to recognize His voice.

How It Impacted Me

Junior and senior year of high school was a time in my life when my relationship with God was really starting to grow. I was constantly in communication with God throughout my day. I would pray to Him in my head as I rode the bus to school. I would sing worship songs to Him under my breath as I walked the halls between classes.  I would skip lunch sometimes to hide in the stairwell and read my Bible.

Now, post-college and having spent a few years in the grind of work, ministry and responsibility, I forget to talk with God throughout the day more often than I’d like to admit.  Conversation with God gets lost in busyness of all my thoughts and rushing from one thing to the next.  Reading the “Crazytown” chapter on connecting with God and talking to Him in the moment throughout the whole day reminded to come back to that place of talking with God constantly.

I remember how precious that season was in high school. How much more connected to God my heart is when I take time for the 30-second prayers in the moment, not just my scheduled prayer time for the day.  How much more at peace I feel when I invite Him into what goes on in my heart and in my life as things come up. He lives in me all the time through the Holy Spirit so I can talk to Him at any time and that’s pretty much the coolest thing ever. (John 14:16-18) I’m signing up again to really pursue constant communication with God after reading Talking With God.

Why You Should Read It

Like I said earlier, prayer is something Christians often know we should do and even want to do but feel overwhelmed with where to start or feel guilty for not doing it enough. Talking With God will help you to see prayer for the precious, simple, yet powerful thing that it is: a conversation with God who knows you and loves you.

God has placed so much power in prayer to build relationship with Him and to see Him work in the world and I believe every follower of Jesus needs to learn how to make prayer a vital part of their lives. Talking With God will help you do that in a way that is refreshingly simple and accessible no matter where you are on your journey in prayer.
