In this episode, you and I are exploring the lyrics in of some of my favorite mainstream and Christian songs that deal with themes of God, faith, and spiritual questions–”7 Days” and “All We Know” by Alessia Cara and “The Architect” by Kacey Musgraves. Together we’ll unpack the topics and questions brought up in the lyrics of these songs and look at how the Bible speaks to those themes. If you’ve ever wondered why bad things happen in the world and what God plans to do about it, whether we can know for sure there is a God, and if so, whether He can be known personally, this discussion is for you!

“7 Days” by Alessia Cara
Why do bad things happen in the world and does God care?
HERE is the track-by-track interview mentioned in the episode, where Alessia shares stories behind the songs on her The Pains of Growing album, including “7 Days” and “All We Know.”
God doesn’t cause the chaos and suffering in the world. It’s the result of human sin and it’s destructive consequences on our lives and in the world. God doesn’t cause our pain; He wants to heal it.
- Genesis 1-3
- Romans 8:18-40
God has a plan to do something about the chaos and suffering in the world when Jesus returns.
- Revelation 21:3-5
- 2 Peter 3
- John 3:16-17
- Ephesians 1:4-5
And in the meantime while we’re waiting for the return of Jesus, He comforts us and helps us through trials in this life.
- John 16:33
- Psalm 34:17-19; Psalm 143:3
- Psalm 62:8
- Psalm 68:19
- Philippians 4:6-7
- 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
- Romans 3:3-5
- Romans 8:18-40
- 1 Peter 1:6-7
The following two episodes would make great follow-up episodes to this one, because the themes relate to “7 Days.”
- How to Be Honest with God in Prayer (Inspired by “Dear God” by Hunter Hayes) is all about getting vulnerable with God and learning how to process emotions with Him.
- How Jesus Gives Us Hope in Hard Times (Inspired by “High Water” by Tori Kelly) is about hope and encouragement while walking through a trial and trusting Jesus to bring you through it.
“All We Know” by Alessia Cara + “The Architect” by Kacey Musgraves
Is there a plan for the world? Is there a God and can we know Him personally?
God created the heavens, the earth, and every person with intricacy, complexity, and intentionality. When we consider these things, they don’t point to chance and randomness, they point to an intentional, loving Creator. The Bible says that creation itself testifies of God’s glory and existence.
- Psalm 19:1-6
- Psalm 139
- Romans 1:20
God made the world, gives life to every human being. God loves people and His desire is that every one of us would know Him personally. We can know God personally and have a relationship with Him when we put our faith in His Son Jesus to save us from our sins that separate us from God.
- Acts 17:24-31
- John 1:1-18
- John 3:16-17
