“High Water” by Tori Kelly is an inspirational song about believing you can make it through hard times. So, in this episode of the Scripture & Song series, I want to share with you a personal story of an encounter I had with God through this song at a Tori Kelly concert. Then, together, we’ll learn from these lyrics and some biblical songs from the book of Psalms about how to have hope and walk with Jesus through trials in life. (And I might also full on nerd out a bit about Tori, who is my favorite artist on the planet! 😉)

Jesus Walks With Us Even Through Life’s Darkest Valleys
Key Lyric: Broken-hearted tears, forever kind of rain/Alone with all my fears, can’t escape the pain/Tired of holdin’ on, I’m runnin’ out of faith
Psalm 23 is a picture of how God walks with us and cares for us in life–even when we are walking through hard seasons and dark valleys in life, as David called them. He cares for our needs, gives us rest and peace, protection and comfort. He guides us along the right path. He’s close to us when we go through hard things. He loves us. He pursues us with His goodness.
Whatever happens to you in life and in any situation you face, if you are a follower of Jesus, you can get through it because you have Him walking with you and helping you through it. And because you have Jesus walking with you, you know what’s on the other side of trials and pain. You know that He’s able to bring hope, purpose, joy, and victory on the other side of the struggles we go through in life.

How Jesus Helps Us Through Hard Times In Life
Key Lyric: Something is comin’ in the mornin’/If I can make it through the night/Whatever comes, Hell or high water/I know, I know what’s on the other side
Psalm 27 is another prayer David wrote while he was still in the midst of his trial, not yet on the other side of it. And that’s where you and I will find ourselves at times throughout our lives as well, and it’s the space “High Water” sits in as well. We learn three things from David’s prayer in Psalm 27:11-14 about how to walk with Jesus through trials and how He helps through hard times. And these are three things you and I can pray over the struggles and trials we experience in life too.
(1) He gives us wisdom and guidance to navigate the situation we are facing.
(2) He helps us confidently believe we will see His goodness in our situation.
(3) He strengthens us to wait patiently and courageously for His intervention.
