Resources If You’re New To Learning About The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts

Is the topic of who the Holy Spirit is or what spiritual gifts are new to you? Or maybe it’s not new but you’re wanting to do some deeper study or share resources with some you are discipling. Maybe the idea of things like prophecy, healing, miracles, and tongues freak you out. Maybe you love Holy Spirit and His gifts (like me!) but hearing teaching on it always refreshes and strengthens you in your faith. Wherever you fit into this subject, these resources will help you. (See the full YouTube playlist I made for you linked at the end of this article.)

I have a 5-part blog series on the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts which you can read here and a 4-part series specifically on the gift of prophecy, which you can read here. Read those for context and for tons of Scripture you can study. Below is a curated list of podcasts, sermons, and books I personally have been blessed by and recommend to help you learn more about the work of the Holy Spirit and experience it more in your life.

Podcasts and Sermons About The Holy Spirit & Spiritual Gifts

Unexpected with Hannah Love Podcast Episodes on Gifts of the Spirit

Hannah Mooney is a married to Shay Mooney from the Country Pop duo Dan + Shay (who happens to be one of my favorite bands in the world, side note 😊 ), but she is a strong Christian with such a sweet and sincere love for Jesus and a great podcaster in her own right. I love the way she uses her platform to encourage others in their walk with Jesus.

She has a few podcast episodes on the Holy Spirit, listed below. The first one is a quick overview of her personal experience discovering more of the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. The second is a candid conversation with Hannah’s sister-in-law, Erica Bankston, where they both go into more detail about their upbringing in their respective Christian traditions and share some vulnerable encouragements for those who may be hesitant to embrace the gifts of the Spirit due to unfamiliarity or having seen the gifts misused.

In the third episode, they talk through some definitions of different gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they’ve seen them in practice in their own lives. The fourth is an interview with minister Jessi Green where they discuss many things, including the baptism with the Holy Spirit, revival, and pursuing God’s calling on your life.

Presence Pioneers Podcast Episodes on The Baptism with the Holy Spirit and Speaking In Tongues

These two short teachings by Matthew Lilley are some of the best I’ve heard on the topic of what it means to be baptized with the Holy Spirit and the purpose of speaking in tongues in the Christian life. They are super practical, filled with Scripture, and a good simple resource for you to share with others too.

Pastor Michael Miller Sermon on Speaking In Tongues

Michael Miller is the lead pastor of UPPERROOM in Dallas, TX (which I’ve had the privilege to visit on a recent trip to Dallas). You are probably familiar with the worship music that has come from this church. Pastor Michael’s sermon on praying in tongues is another one of the best I’ve heard and it encouraged me so much when I first watched it, even though speaking in tongues has been a part of my Christian life for many years now. I appreciate how practical and relaxed he made the discussion about this topic that is so important but can be contentious for some. He shared vulnerably about his own journey and experience with speaking in tongues as well.

Joel Bomberger Sermons on Holy Spirit Baptism, Speaking In Tongues, and Spiritual Gifts

Joel is an evangelist and content creator (who is a great follow on social media) who often sees the Holy Spirit move in powerful ways in his life and ministry. He’s great at practically explaining Scripture’s teaching on the Holy Spirit’s work, demonstrating what it’s like to walk in it, and equipping you to do the same. And He always shares encouraging testimonies of how God is changing lives–especially among youth!

I added several of his teaching and testimony videos to this YouTube playlist I made.

Church On The Way Sermons Series On Spiritual Gifts

Here’s another sermon series I loved! Pastor Tim Clark and Pastor Doug Anderson did a series going through all the biblical passages that teach about spiritual gifts. They define each of the different categories of spiritual gifts described in Scripture–motivational gifts, ministry gifts, and manifestation gifts (or gifts of the Spirit).* They define each gift individually as well.

*For context, you can read my quick overview of the definitions of those three categories of spiritual gifts in part 1 of my blog series on the Holy Spirit.

You can find these messages about midway through this YouTube playlist I made. There are several videos in the series.

Dr. Charles Stanley Sermon Series On The Motivational Gifts

Dr. Stanley has gone on to be with the Lord now, but he is a beloved spiritual father in the faith and is still one of my favorite preachers. He came from Baptist tradition, as opposed to the Charismatic/Pentecostal tradition like I do and like the other podcasters, authors, and preachers linked in this resource list do. I really loved hearing him expound the Scriptures on the gifts in Romans 12:6-8. I found it to be a good companion to the Church On The Way series.

Again, there are several videos, and you can find them in the YouTube playlist.

Books About The Holy Spirit & Spiritual Gifts

Last, but not least, here are some books I recommend! They cover topics like the character of the Holy Spirit and His role in the Christian’s life, definitions of the spiritual gifts and practical tips to help you experience them, and learning to hear God’s voice personally and prophetically for others.
